Rehoming Policy - Rabbits and Guinea pigs

The home check for rabbits and guinea pigs will be carried out by an experienced homechecker from the Yorkshire Animal Shelter and will cover the following points -

  • We will not rehome single rabbits to live outdoors alone. Rabbits are social animals and should be housed in pairs (neutered). We will consider rehoming just one rabbit if they are to be kept as a house rabbit and therefore will have lots of company, or as a companion for an existing neutered rabbit.
  • Guinea pigs should never be kept alone or as a companion for a rabbit (despite what pet shops say!)
  • Pairs of rabbits will require a large hutch or cage with access to an outdoor run (recommended run size 8' x 4')
  • Guinea pigs will require a medium size hutch with access to an outdoor run (recommended run size 3' x 4'), this is more than adequate for a pair of guinea pigs.
  • The shelter believes that rabbits do not make good pets for very young children. Exceptions may be made depending on the temperament and sociability of the rabbit. Guinea pigs are much easier for young children to handle.
